Blushes and Bruises, 2020 - ongoing
"Blushes and Bruises" is an ongoing project that delves deep into the complexity of intimacy, boyhood, coming-of-age, and queerness, mirroring the intricate connections I share with my subjects. Through a series of (self) portraits, I deliberately maintain a subtle, yet palpable distance, crafting an atmosphere that is intimate, poetic, and almost voyeuristic.
The photo project delves into themes of sexuality, self-discovery, and vulnerability. Through a series of portraits featuring young men, the project explores the delicate balance between disclosure, intimacy, and protection, inviting viewers to contemplate the complexities of identity and the journey of self-discovery.
In these melancholic portraits, one can discern the subtle undercurrents of violence and loneliness, which serve as a stark reminder of the duality inherent in queer joy. It is a joy often interwoven with both the traumatic and transformative experiences that have shaped us as queer people.
This work is a testament to my unyielding fascination with portraying homosexuality and homoeroticism, and displaying the ominous feeling and sense of grief that is so closely linked to queer identity. Through self-portraits, I strive to capture the essence of my ever-evolving identity, engaging in a clever interplay with my audience. Turning the lens on others, mainly towards men I am attracted to, I create an intimate setting where the camera becomes a tool to get closer to my subject, as well as a shield that protects my vulnerability.
